PATHS® Curriculum

What is the PATHS® curriculum?

The PATHS® curriculum is a comprehensive program that promotes emotional and social competencies, reducing aggression and behavior problems in preschool through elementary school-aged children, while simultaneously enhancing the educational process in the classroom. This innovative curriculum is designed to be used by educators and counselors in a multi-year, universal prevention model. Although primarily focused on the school and classroom settings, information and activities are also included for use with parents.

The PATHS® curriculum is taught two to three times per week for a minimum of 20-30 minutes per day. It provides teachers with systematic, developmentally-based lessons, materials, and instructions to facilitate their students emotional literacy, self-control, social competence, positive peer relations, and interpersonal problem-solving skills. A key objective of promoting these developmental skills is to prevent or reduce behavioral and emotional problems.

Curriculum Integration and The Common Core. The PATHS® model is designed to be integrated with both language arts and social studies. Throughout the curriculum, at every grade level, The PATHS® curriculum is designed to be integrated with and advance key skills including writing, reading, and listening skills. Further, the curriculum is designed to be integrated with social studies/history and developmentally appropriate example lessons are provided at every grade level.

Preschool/Kindergarten Model. The PATHS® Preschool/Kindergarten curriculum supports educators and counselors in creating a Preschool/Kindergarten environment that helps children (3 to 6 years of age) develop self-control, positive self-esteem, emotional awareness, basic problem-solving skills, social skills and friendships. PATHS® Preschool/Kindergarten is grounded in the science of the proven-effective, nationally recognized PATHS® curriculum.

The program’s two years’ worth of lessons and activities highlight writing, reading, telling stories, singing, drawing, science and math concepts, as well as helping students build the critical cognitive skills necessary for school readiness and academic success. The PATHS® Preschool program, with Instructor’s Manual, Curriculum Manuals and parent involvement materials, can be easily integrated into existing learning environments. Timing and frequency of sessions can be adapted to suit individual classroom needs.
